What risks are you taking?

I know, I owe you a recap of Maria Killam's True Color Expert workshop Trust me, it is coming this next week!

But I had to post about my newest adventure....

Taking a risk and putting yourself out there.....

Olioboard is a great (free!) site that allows anyone to put together their own mood board. I use it for my own home and for clients. Sounds like fun? It is! Especially when you factor in the challenges.

I haven't entered challenges previously because, well I am a new designer and still learning, and  growing. I didn't think I had what it took to go up against the big dogs!

Despite all this I decided to enter the contest anyway. The biggest reason was this lady...

Tobi Fairley, along with Benjamin Moore are hosting the challenge-Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2013. The prize is a trip to her one of a kind design camps! I have been following Tobi's blog for a while and when she came out with her Design Camp A-Z and Designer MBA, I knew I wanted to be apart of it!

Here is where I could use your help! If I can get into the top four boards I can win a FREE ticket to her camp!

Please go to this link (Bold and Happy Entryway) and click on the heart under the picture. You can vote every day (Please do!!) until December 18th. It only takes a few minutes each day and it would really help me out to making me one happy camper...har har har....

If you aren't already a member of olioboard it just takes a minute to sign up and vote for me. Plus, I will personally love you forever! :)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend...can you believe it will finally be December!! YAY!

Thanksgiving sides....

I am back!  I had such a good time in Vancouver. The weather was great and I met so many nice and fun people.

I don't know about you, but I am hosting Thanksgiving this year. As much as I would like to show you a cute and collected tablescape, I am just trying to keep my head above water because we are hosting 24 people!! I come from a large extended family and I wouldn't have it any other way!

By the way, here is the layout I made for the seating....

What I can share with you is the recipe for one of our sides! We have two versions of sweet potatoes and I will share both of them with you!

This first recipe is a great alternative to traditional casseroles and is something a little different!

Fluffy Sweet Potatoes with Orange
2 1/2 lbs of Yams

1/2 can (3 oz) frozen orange juice concentrate

1/4 C. (packed) brown sugar

Grated rind of 1 orange (I cut this out and it was
still pretty orange tasting)

1/4 C. (1/2 stick) butter or margarine

Wash sweet potatoes. Cook in 2 in. boiling salted water until tender. Peel. Mash with remaining ingredients. Makes 8 servings

The next recipe is a new family favorite and if you haven't tried it before you should for this Thanksgiving!

Ruth's Chris Sweet Potato Casserole

FOR THE CRUST:
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1 cup chopped nuts (pecans preferred)
1/3 stick butter, melted

FOR THE SWEET POTATO MIXTURE:
3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs, well beaten
1 stick butter ( 1/2 cup), melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine brown sugar, flour, nuts and butter in mixing bowl. Set aside.Combine sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs and butter in a mixing bowl in the order listed. Mix thoroughly. Pour mixture into buttered 9x13 baking dish. Sprinkle the surface of the sweet potato mixture evenly with the crust mixture. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to set at least 30 minutes before serving.

Hope those help if you haven't narrowed down your sides yet!

I will probably do a followup post on my class with Maria Killam this week but if the week gets away from me I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! I am so grateful for each and every one of you who read this blog!

I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane....and House of Fifty!

Just a quick post before I leave for my flight to Canada. I'll be furthering my education with Maria Killam. If you haven't heard of her you owe it to yourself to check out her website and blog, you will never look at colour the same way again! I'll be sure to post all about it when I get back!

Also, I just got the holiday issue of House of Fifty in my inbox!

I have sung the praises of this e-zine before but today is a little different...

Janell Beals (the founding editor) has put her heart, soul and personal finances into this one of a kind magazine. Having set aside an initial amount to launch and support this venture, we have been blessed with original content and a magazine to go to that is "real" and full of heart.

You can read more about it on her blog here but as the magazine has gotten more successful with each issue the costs to maintain it have gone up.   The decision has been made to charge for the magazine, and rightfuly so!  At only $1.50 an issue, it is very affordable. Please join me in showing your support for this wonderful magazine and purchase the holiday issue!  I know I will be as soon as I get back from my trip!

See a preview and purchase the latest issue HERE!

Sarah Richardson-Webisodes

One designer that I can't get enough of is Sarah Richardson. I love the way she takes classic elements and mixes them up into something that is always clean and fresh. Her and Tommy are a dynamite team and I have been watching them since the Design Inc. days!

Her new (in the USA) show Sarah's House 4 is currently airing on HGTV. (Kinda makes me wish we hadn't canceled cable) But for those of us that still want our Sarah and Tommy fix we have her website! Sarah is currently airing webisodes where they redo a home using just items from big box stores. They are already a few episodes into it and the results look great!

Great to see Sarah giving the average home owner some great stylish tips!

Are you a Sarah or Tommy fan, or both? Do you have a favorite episode or series?
