small updates to my home...

Hi Everyone! We have been on vacation and had a great time.  As I am catching up on housework (I feel I need a vacation from the vacation!) I thought I would show you a little bit of the updates around here.

I am still working on the arrangement and even the specific pieces. The paint color obviously needs to change, art needs to go on the wall but here is how the living room looks for now.

Sometimes with a house that needs a lot of work everywhere it is hard to pick a place to start! I am hoping to have some other projects underway soon to share with you!

I am also trying to figure out the best time of day to photograph this room. The large windows face west but I took these shots in the morning before 10am.  Any suggestions? Pin It

honeycomb/peacock mirror is back....

I loved this mirror when it was at Pier 1 over a year ago...it is no longer there but Zgallerie has picked it up!

Here are some great rooms to inspire you....to buy one! HA!

Kristen Hutchins and Hillary Thomas

Danielle and Nick

Jonathan Adler

Last time Pier 1 had them they sold like hotcakes! I have a Zgallerie pretty close to me, looks like I will have to look at this beauty in person. And then think about purchasing it...over and over again. I never figure out how to really pull the trigger on an item I love.  Maybe it will go on sale. Keeping my fingers crossed. Pin It

Caught a bug...

The laptop I work on for this blog that has all my pictures has a bug. So until I can figure out what is wrong and get it fixed there may be some more silence here.

Wish me luck it is an easy fix!

Spinach salad with poppy seed dressing

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We had such a great time with family and friends, and there is always amazing food! This year I was asked to make the salad and I thought I would share it with you.

Spinach Salad
Serves 8-10 people.  (You can add more spinach to make it enough for 12-14 people)
1 head iceberg lettuce or green leaf lettuce
1 bunch spinach
(or you can use 2 bunches of spinach instead of mixing with other lettuce)
       * both rinsed well, dried and torn into bite size pieces

3/4 lb. sliced mushrooms
3/4 lb. grated swiss cheese
1 thinly sliced medium red onion
1/2 lb. cooked and crumbled bacon
3/4 cup sliced almonds or cashews
( I like it best with Cashews, but we have people with allergies so we used almonds)

All these ingredients can be prepared ahead of time and then mixed together right before serving.

Poppy Seed Dressing

3/4 Tbs poppy seeds
1/3 cup white vinegar
3/4 cup grapeseed oil
1/3 cup sugar
2 Tbs mustard (not dry)
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 Tbs grated white onion

Mix and blend (or shake) together or mix in blender 1-2 minutes.

This can be prepared the day before or hours before to allow the ingredients to blend in.   Yummy!
Do you have any favorite family dishes that you  made this weekend?

Walnuts....not just for snacking.

I have been thinking about my gallery wall and what to put in there. I have also been thinking about simplifying the arrangement and just doing a collection of pictures I have.

However, the focal piece is old and has seen better days. There are a lot of nicks and scratches all over the frame

Enter the walnut. I had read somewhere that the oils in the nut helps with camouflaging nicks and scratches in wood. It was worth a try!

It worked!! Both of these pictures are in full sun and although it doesn't look like much ...
Before------------------------------------------After

It looks a lot better in the shade, almost like new!

And now "The Lady" is looking refreshed and ready for her closeup!

*Note* I tried this on some other frames with a little bigger gashes and it does not work well for those. I would just keep this treatment for more superficial dents and scratches.

Let me know if you try this out! I was so happy that this worked and saved me from having to buy a new frame or paint it.

What is something that got a quick fix in your house?

Easter pinterest pin up!

Can you believe Easter is this weekend?!?!  It always throws me for a loop when it is in early April or late March. It really crept up on me this time, I was just beginning to recover from spring break!

I love Easter. The weather is usually beautiful this time of year and I love all the spring buds and other signs of life and renewal after a long winter.

Here are some great ideas that I pinned on my Holiday-Easter board

Games and activities

Carrot cake rollout cookies

Add some whimsy to your holiday table with this cute bunny napkin tutorial!

Seeing that place setting reminds me of our great family meal that we have each Easter. My mother makes these amazing butterhorns...yum I can't wait.

What special Easter traditions do you have?
